What is a keyword

When a search engine user types in a few words into the search box, the words are known as keywords. The keywords are linked to a specific type of site and they will show up in the results pages. If you search for Microsoft for example it will return Microsoft.com as the first result on the page. This would make Microsoft the keyword for that website. When designing a site is important to have your keywords visibly placed on the page so a visiting search engine spider will see them and now what your site is associated with.

Here's a little run down of where to have your keywords on your site:

Title:

Is the keyword present in the title of the web page?

Domain/URL:

Is the keyword present in the domain or URL in question?

Style:

Is there some place on the page that the keyword is used in bold, h4, italic, or in a Hex type heading?

Density:

How many times does the keyword show on the page? The number of keywords in relation to page text is called Keyword Density.

MetaInformation:

Although deprecated, some search engines still read Meta keywords and Meta descriptions tags and use the words they find their as an indication of the potential keywords on the page.
